With the recent news about the school shooting in Connecticut, there's a lot of question about ways in which this tragedy could have been prevented. There's not one simple, clear answer that could have prevented this incident.

It is clear, however, that there are likely warning signs when a child has mental health issues that need to be addressed. When mental illness is not treated by a professional, it can get worse.

Although most people with mental illness don't ever become violent, it is certainly a possibility. And it is up to society to take steps to help the mentally ill when possible.

Obviously, the best intervention is an early intervention. The sooner that the symptoms are treated, often the better the prognosis.

Parents who recognize warning signs in young children are best to get them treated as soon as possible. There are many warning signs that kids may need professional help.

Professional help may mean counseling, behavior modification, medication or in extreme cases, residential treatment. Treatment can improve the quality of your child's life and at times, can save lives.
