It's no wonder why parents give in to whining. A study confirmed that whining is the worst sound in the world. And parents are desperate to do anything to make it stop.
To listen to a child whining can send chills down even the backs of even the most stoic parents. Parents only have a few seconds to choose how to react.
Ignoring it can make it seem to get worse at first. Giving in will make it go away. Depending on your mood, you may not feel like you have enough stamina to withstand it today and you end up giving in.
It's a vicious cycle however. Give in once and your child quickly learns, whining will get him what he wants. Then the next time you say no, he'll whine louder and longer than ever before, in hopes he can get you to cave in again.
And who wouldn't want the worst noise in the whole world to go away as fast as possible? You wouldn't be human if you didn't.
However, the key is to look at the long-term. Stay strong. Endure the pain for a while now and you'll be able to make it go away for good.
