In case you missed the "Most Intimidating Book Ever" contest that I started a few posts ago, don't worry. There's still plenty of time to cast your vote. I've decided to keep the contest going until the end of the summer because, believe it or not, summer can be the season of big books.
Well, at least it is where I come from. The university I attended offered summer courses on infamously tough authors like Marcel Proust and James Joyce. For me, these courses were the beginning of a (lifelong?) habit. I started the summer of 2012 by re-reading some selections from Tolstoy and Italo Calvino. Next on my personal schedule are Dostoevsky and Thomas Mann. And some lighter reads. And (let's be honest) a whole bunch of movies.
So, even though summer is a relaxing season--and, naturally, a great time to get lost in a big book--summer also offers a lot of distractions. Are you planning to read any daunting novels this summer? I'd love to know.
And if you do intend to tackle Cervantes's Don Quixote, or Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, or another difficult book, how do you intend to balance your time? Personally, I'd hate to miss a day of beautiful weather, or the next blockbuster, because I'm too busy reading. But then again, books like Don Quixote and Crime and Punishment aren't all that easy to put down. How would you choose?
