Every time I watch Extreme Couponing, I wonder two things: How do they always know exactly where the right coupons are hidden in those huge binders? And how does the store allow them to stack so many coupons and rebates?? Two new apps help solve both of those problems -- and can save you a bundle.
The SnipSnap app lets you snap a quick iPhone photo of a retailer's coupon (such as those from Bed, Bath & Beyond, Target, Olive Garden, and more) -- then the app converts it into a scannable bar code. You show the bar code to the cashier, and you get your discount. I tried it, and it really is that easy. Plus, you can sort your coupons into separate "bundles" within the app that allow you to sort just the coupons you need for each particular trip.
A separate app called Checkout 51 also uses your iPhone's camera, but this time to give you deals after you've already paid. The app lists each week's deals every Thursday. For instance, they might give you $5.00 cash back if you buy a certain brand of diapers. You just buy that product, then take a photo of your receipt and upload it to the app. Checkout 51 credits you with the $5.00, and when your credit balance hits $20.00, they send you a check. No rebate forms to complete, no cutting UPC labels off of boxes.
You can stack the Checkout 51 deals with existing coupons and sales, which means sometimes you'll end up earning money by buying products. The only downside is that Checkout 51 is strictly a Canadian app at the moment, but the developers plan to launch in the U.S. in mid-2013.
