On that page we focus on the historical aspects of Native Hawaiian culture and Native Hawaiians as people indigenous to the United States, which includes their political relationship to the US.
Most people that visit Hawaii have very little knowledge of the history before December 7, 1941, the day Pearl Harbor was attacked. Hawaii was not a state yet and was still considered a territory which had been obtained through the illegal actions of the United States military in 1893 (a fact which has been fully acknowledged by the U.S. Congress in its official apology to Native Hawaiians in 1993). Native Hawaiian culture, like the cultures of Native American tribes, was profoundly affected by the waves of immigrants that arrived to its shores after 1778. Hawaii's contact with foreign diseases, Christianity, military aggression, and transnational business would produce seismic shifts in its indigenous population and from which it still struggles to recover even today.
There are numerous periods in and aspects of Hawaii's postcolonial history where these efforts to recover are pronounced. They are often referred to in terms of the Native Hawaiian cultural Renaissance. This week at my About.com's Native American History page I have written about two of these eras.
