Sicilian Pizza at L&B Spumoni Garden

One of my favorite pizza places in New York is L&B Spumoni Gardens, located in Brooklyn. It's been around since 1939, originally opened to sell the Italian dessert, spumoni. But they have also become famous for the excellent Sicilian-style square pizzas, with the sauce on top of the cheese. While it's not authentic Sicilian pizza (made without mozzarella cheese and with anchovies and bread crumbs), it is a great example of what Sicilian pizza turned into once it reached the United States--a delicious, spongy thick crust topped with tomato sauce and lots of mozzarella cheese. You can find authentic Sicilian pizza in New York at Famous Ben's in Soho in Manhattan and Cotta Bene in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
