Back to School and New House Rules

With the back to school season, it's an excellent time to remind kids of the household rules. You might find you need to make some changes to the rules this year too. So establish house rules now to help set up good habits for the rest of the school year.

Set the rules about when homework needs to be completed. For example, should it be done as soon as your child comes home? Or can he have a 30 minute break before he needs to get work? Or maybe you simply decide he can't use his electronics until his homework is finished.

And what time is bed time going to be this year? Does he need to go to bed at the same time as last year? Or should he be allowed to stay up later? Or maybe for an older teen, you should allow him to decide on his own when he needs to go to bed, as long as he gets up for school on time each day.

And don't forget to look at the chore list. What sorts of chores do you want your kids to have during the school week? There are lots of reasons why chores are important for kids so remember that by assigning chores, you'll help them in the long run.

Establish good habits with a healthy routine now and you'll make the rest of the school year much easier. A little preventative discipline goes a long way. Learn how to create household rules for your child and start the year off right.
