Cleaning Garage Sale and Other Thrifty Finds

Official garage sale season has begun and like most bargain hunters, I've been searching for the next great deal.

My husband and I have been in the need of new dining room chairs for awhile. With garage sales popping up everywhere the past few weeks, I knew now was the time to start my hunt.

This past weekend, I picked up a set of wooden dining chairs with hawaiian print cushions (most likely reupholstered by the previous owner) at a local garage sale. The chairs were in pretty decent shape, but a bit grimy from decades of use.

These chairs not only require a throughout cleaning, but also my routine used furniture treatment: pest control, deep cleaning and disinfecting. I am a stickler when it comes to cleaning used furniture and other items bought at garage sales, flea markets and found on the side of the road. Not only do you have to worry about germs, but also bed bugs, fleas and mites.

How do you go about cleaning used furniture? Are there any products you find work best?
