Abandoning unused furnace thermostat

Question

I bought a house that has an unused thermostat in the living room. I want to remove it and repair the wall. Can I simply tape the wires, shove them back in the wall, and plaster the hole? Don't want a fire! Thanks, Kathy

Is this low voltage wire? If the wires are small and have 6 or 8 wires in the bunch they are Low Voltage and can be buried behind the wall.If these wires are larger and contain the following wires Black,Red,White and a green or a copper wire. Then you have to put in a cover for the box so you get to it if you may need it someday.
