Question

QUESTION: We have a Barwick Model 4893 grandfather clock that we bought in PA in 1973. We moved to CA for 31 yrs then back to PA. The clock has a 155 triple chime movement, Argos (?) works # UW32008. One of the chime rods (next to shortest) on the side that rings every 15 minutes broke off right at the end of the holding screw. How can we find a replace rod and screw? Thanks so much for any guidance you can provide.

ANSWER: I can help you get a new rod. You need to be sure you can get that screw head out. It may unscrew easily but most often it's rather hard. You may need to put some penetrating oil on it and let it sit for a few days. The other trick is to heat the block with a torch and then remove the screw. It's a right handed thread and unscrews like a regular screw. The new rods come with the threaded end already on them. The pitch of the rod is determined by the length of it. You want to replace it with a rod of the same dimensions but may need to tune it by cutting the rod. The shorter the rod, the higher the pitch.

QUESTION: I have the screw head out of the block...the rod actually broke off in it. I'll figure a way to get the broken piece of rod out of the screw head. How do I contact you to obtain a replacement rod (or replacement rod AND screw would be even better)?

Thank you again.

ANSWER: Don't be concerned with the rod in the screw. After this is all over you will throw it away. How long is the rod, not including the screw? The new rod will come with the screw attached to it. You will just screw it into the block. I sell chime rods but will need to know the length.

QUESTION: The broken portion of the chime rod is 12-1/2 inches. It is broken right at the bottom of the screw head. He screw itself is 1/2 inch long...I can't tell how much of the rod remains in the screw head.

Do I contact you directly at www.norkro.com?

Thanks so much...you've provided a lot of relief already.

Answer

I have a 13" chime rod. Price is $15.00 + $4.59 shipping. It can be cut with a hack saw or a diamond wheel. I can cut it for you but if the pitch is too high to be in tune with the other rods you will not be able to lower it. At 13" the pitch should be too low and need to be cut to raise the pitch.
