QuestionEdit

plastic piece

I was told I needed a new starter because the plastic housing that the connecting wire slides and locks into is cracked. I have had the starter test and the unit is working just fine with the exception of the cracked plastic not holding the wire in tight. Is there any reason it can't be direct wired or the plastic piece on the starter replaced. I have never ever had an issue with the starter until I took it in for the oil change, now it is broken.

AnswerEdit

I don't see a problem with a direct wiring so long as it is secure and not likely to be shorted by touching a piece of nearby chassis metal. You might be able to go to a alternator-starter rebuilding shop and acquire a new piece as an alternative 'fix'. Be sure to disconnect the battery before doing an work on it, removing the - post clamp. Roland
