QuestionEdit

QUESTION: We recently acquired an Ethan Allen grandmother clock, Model #08-3808, Movement E. We are trying to find some parts for it and have not found a source. Specifically we need a pendulum suspension spring. Can you help?

ANSWER: I can help you with this. Ethan Allen did not make the clock movement, only the clock case. There are two ways to do this: One is to match the spring by size and shape. The other it so match it to the movement. It was made in Germany by one of three companies: Hermle, Kieninger or Urgos. If you give me the markings stamped on the back of the clock movement I can work in that direction. Otherwise you can measure what you have and match it to the springs on the following page: http://www.norkro.com/webpages/sspage3.htm It should be one on the left side of the page. Either the first photo or the third or fourth down. Let me know if you need more help.

QUESTION: Thank you, . It does say Urgos, Made in Germany, then something about Jewels (can't read) and I think it says something about unadjusted? That's all on the right side, then on the left side are the numbers UW32/1 A, and in the center the numbers 218841. The current spring is in an area that's hard to measure without taking it out, we think it may be the GM size but aren't totally sure. Any further advice or thoughts?

AnswerEdit

The movement says "no jewels, unadjusted" but that is not important. If your spring looks like the Urgos (molded hook in bottom block) it's probably the Grandmother spring. The grandfather spring is only used on the really large movements. If your spring has metal blocks, hole in the top, pin in the bottom you would probable use the Hermle SS-0060 spring.
