I want the text I enter in one cell to show up in another cell on another sheet. When I use ='sheet1'!k29 I get a #value. It works with numbers but not with text (words)?

It should work with both, that error should not happen. One thing that you can do is to type only the equal sign on the cell, navigate to the original cell to refer, and press Enter. should type the correct reference for the cell, and you will be sure that the syntax is right.
