Firebrick cement removal

Question

Hi I live on a narrowboat in England and have bought new firebricks and cement to replace old ones, they are the correct ones for the stove, a tiny Faversham. Having difficulty removing top as the old cement is holding fast! any suggestions other than keep plugging away. With Thanks Chris
