Question

How to I re-synch the chimes on my clock? It will chime 15- 20+ times on the hour. What is that string hanging down to the right of the clock face?

Answer

Normally when a clock strikes more times than 12 it will be due to control levers that are gummed up where they pivot or bearing wear that has developed on the movement. Either case indicates a mechanism that is in need of cleaning & overhaul. Most grandfather clocks will require this @ every 15 yrs. The string is probably a repeater string if your clock is a 2 weight antique, you didn't mention. You can pull it and it triggers the strike to repeat the last count given.
