Question

I have a Heinz Jauch grandfather clock Movement.#s on back plate are 77875 343879. It has no pendulum. I need to know what length and weight of pendulum to use for it.

I hope you can answer this question for me. Thanks, Chris

Answer

Usually Jauch movements have a PL number. This would be stamped on the back plate of the clock movement. For example; 78PL would mean that there would be 78 centimeters from the top of the pendulum hanger to the bottom of the pendulum bob. If there is no PL number the only way to find out how long the pendulum should be would be to hang a pendulum on it and check the timekeeping. Too fast; you need a longer pendulum. Too slow; you need a shorter pendulum. There actually is a formula for determining the pendulum length but it involves counting the number of teeth on the gears and you would need to take the movement apart to do this.
