QuestionEdit

I own a Mauthe wall clock that my parents bought in Germany in the late 1940's. Some of the chimes, but not all, do not match the hour when struck. What can I do about this?

AnswerEdit

Phil, I believe you are referring to the strike (counts out the hour) rather than the chimes (plays the tune on the quarters). If this is correct, there is probably a problem with the count mechanism. I believe the clock has what we call the rack an snail strike mechanism. In any case, it will probably have to be looked at by an experienced clockmaker. If you are mechanical and can get to the front of the movement (removing the hands and dial, I could look at a photo and possibly help you identify the problem and fix it. You can send the photo to my shop email address below.

QuestionEdit

I have a 47-year-old Mauthe wall clock that has beautiful chimes, with the minor exception of the one that strikes on the hour. I would like to have the chimes restored to their original condition, or find a proper replacement set of chimes. The hourly chime has broken off its setting and cannot be replaced. I would appreciate any help/direction you can provide. Thank you!

AnswerEdit

Mauthe clocks do have a beautiful chiming sound. They really engineered the materials better than any other company to get that sound. Unfortunately, those chime assemblies are not reproduced by any companies. They only way to get them is to buy old ones. You may be able to find one on ebay if you search every week or so for a few months.
